Senior 1 Outing

Good afternoon dear senior 1 students. Next Monday 10th October we will be going on an outing at Tal-Qroqq sports complex. Activities include swimming, squash and hip hop.

May I remind you that you need to get 6.50 euro till next Thursday 6th October.

Please for the outing, get these with you:

Small bag with food and drink

Towel

Swimsuit in bag (to change at the location)

Soap, shampoo and brush (as you will be having a shower there)

Books for last lesson

Those of you who have Home Economics last lesson, you just need to get the booklet which I have given you and the homework worksheet (obviously completed) ‘Safety and Hygiene in the Kitchen’.

Senior 4 practical

Dear senior 4,

Following yesterday’s demonstration lesson, I am uploading the assignment title and the things you need for next practical.

So next practical is about the creaming method. You shall prepare either the Victoria sandwich cake OR the cupcakes using the creaming method (the method we did by hand not with the food mixer). You find the recipes on the handout which I have given you. Michela, since you were absent, here is the handout. The Creaming Method. I will give you the preparation sheet on the 4th April.

The assignment title is: Your friend is throwing a birthday party. Prepare, cook and serve a Victoria sandwich cake or some cupcakes for the party using the creaming method.  Also serve a nutritious drink.

Group 1 are: Alessia, Rachele, Alaa, Timea, Laura, Li. These students will cook on Friday 8th April.

Group 2 are: Michela, Enrico, Deborah, Sam, Celine, Danica. You will cook on Friday 22nd April. We can’t make it on the 15th because there will be the ceremony of the senior 5’s.

Things to get:

Apron

All ingredients for the sandwich cake or the cupcakes. Including the filling ingredients for the sandwich cake and any other ingredients needed for the decoration and presentation. Example yoghurt, strawberries or other fruit, sprinkles, icing sugar, whipping cream and food colouring.

Ingredients for the drink

Bun tin and cupcake cases (if you will make the cupcakes)

2 same sized cake tins and baking paper for each tin (if you will make the sandwich cake). Diametre of the cake tins should not be larger than 19-20cm. You can use foil tins too.

Knife to chop the fruit

Piping bag (if you will make whipped cream for the presentation)

Things for the presentation. You may get: table cloth, cupcake/cake stand, menu card, serving plate, balloons, serving glass for drink, flowers, candles, etc…

Dish cloth

Container to carry the cake or cupcakes with you

A bottle or container for any extra whipping cream.

Remember to do the preparation sheet cautiously as this will be the last one before the practical for the o’level. Make sure that for the reasons for choice, you do not focus only on the nutritional value, but you also need to make reference to the dish chosen and the assignment title, the time management, the cost of the  meal, the colour, flavour and texture, the presentation etc.

Senior 2A pasta practical

Dear senior 2,

I am uploading the groups, as you shall be cooking for the first practical, which is a pasta/rice based dish.

Group 1 – abdul, martin, julian, asia, jay-kay, emily, ava, jake, ashref, faham, matthias, polina. These students will cook on 1st march.

Group 2 – tima, jade, naomi, sophia, francesca, yoon-ah, jimena, king, tqwa, hatoun. These students will cook on 15th march, as on the 8th march, the lesson will be missed due to parents day.

Things to get for the practical:

  1. apron and cap
  2. all the ingredients for the chosen dish – please remember to choose  a dish that can be prepared and cooked in about 70 minutes If in doubt please ask me.
  3. get decoration items so as to serve your meal e.g. table cloth, table mat, a menu card, flowers, a nice serving plate, etc..
  4. a dish cloth to dry the dishes.

Remember that you can cook alone, in pairs or in groups of three. Calculate to get about 80g of pasta for each person, not more.

For the preparation sheet, I suggest that for now you leave it out and I’ll explain how to fill it in next lesson, as I didn’t have time to go through it yesterday.

Senior 4 swiss roll or fruit flan

Good morning senior 4.

Firstly I would like to thank all those who helped me with the washing up.

So, as I told you next practical will be the Swiss roll OR the fruit flan.

If you are going to do the swiss roll, get the following:

6 eggs

150 g self raising flour

150g sugar

1 tsp vanilla

Coconuts for rolling up the swiss roll

For the filling choose any : yoghurt (any flavour), any fruits for the filling and for decorating, sweetened ricotta (300g ricotta and about 3 tablespoons sugar)

* note that I have doubled the ingredients since the dishes we have are too big for just 3 eggs.

If you are going to do the fruit flan get these:

3 eggs

75g sugar

75g self raising flour

1/2 tsp vanilla

For the filling :  yoghurt any flavour, fruits, sprinkles, sweetened ricotta (it’s up to you as long as it is healthy)

Also get a flan tin (about 11 inches in diameter) because we don’t have in the lab.

Other things to get:

Apron and cap

A knife to chop the fruit

Baking paper especially if you are making the swiss roll

A dish cloth

Ingredients for drink

Decoration items: table cloth, table mat, menu card, any decorations suitable for tea time, serving plate for the fruit flan / swiss roll, cup for the drink.

A container in which to carry the Swiss roll or fruit flan.

These are the groups how you will be cooking:

Group 1: will cook on 26th February

Group 2: will cook on 4th March

Enrico, deborah, sam, celine, danica, li

Please make sure to be well prepared as this PRACTICAL WILL CONTRIBUTE TO 15% OF THE ANNUAL EXAM. The preparation sheet has a lot of marks, so make sure to fill it in with caution. I will upload a sample preparation sheet shortly to help you out.
